NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

Activities, meals on tap for National Police Week

Posted

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed National Police Week to be held during the week of May 15th.

This year we will be honoring our police department May 13 – 18. This is an important time for all of us to remember the sacrifices the members of our law enforcement make each day. With everything that happened in Charlotte this month, it is a reminder that our officers, nor their families know if they will be coming home at the end of their shifts. Our officers and non-sworn employees are some of the best and we need to let them know how much they are appreciated.

This week and every week, we must never forget the courage of our law enforcement and their families. However, during National Police week, the Fayetteville Police Foundation salutes these everyday heroes through many activities.

On Monday, May 13, we are hosting a mattress giveaway for our sworn officers. Off-Road Outreach and Dreams for All donated 150 mattresses to be given away. We are also very fortunate to have the Fayetteville City Council making a proclamation for National Police Week. The Field of Blue will be up in front of BJ’s at 5200 Red Tip Road. Flags have been purchased in memory or honor of someone with law enforcement and will be displayed until June 13. We are selling these for $35 and will continue until we take the flags down.  We encourage the community to go out and see them because it is a breathtaking sight.

On Tuesday, May 14, we will serve everyone in the Police Department lunch/dinner from Mission BBQ.

On Wednesday, May 15, we're sponsoring a "Back the Blue" night, where different businesses will give back a portion of their sales from 5 to 9 p.m. They include:

  • Jersey Mike's in Westwood S/C, Cedar Creek Road and Traemoor Village
  • Sammio's on Raeford Road
  • Chick-fil-A on Skibo Road
  • Romeo's Pizza in Walmart S/C on Gillespie (they are giving us 20% from sales all day)
  • ReStore Warehouse off Raeford Road
  • Scrub Oaks on Ramsey Street
  • H8thers on Fort Bragg Road

On Thursday, May 16, we will be taking sweet treats and protein bars to the different precincts.

On Friday, May 17, Chief Braden will be honoring our fallen officers and Pastor Blake Benge from Snyder Memorial Baptist Church will be praying over the Police Department. This will be at 12:30 p.m. in front of the Police Department at 467 Hay Street. We encourage the community to come down and pray for the department. We are also implementing a Prayer Warrior program starting with Snyder Memorial and Manna Church. If an FPD employee would like to have someone pray for them specifically, their name (along with a Back the Blue bracelet) will be given to their "Prayer Warrior."

Saturday, May 18, we will host the Police Ball at the Crown Coliseum, where officers and staff can have a good meal and dance the night away. If anyone would like to sponsor an officer and their guest, they can do so for $150.  We are also selling individual tickets and tables.
