Cape Fear Botanical Garden presents “Ribbit” the Exhibit

FAYETTEVILLE— On September 1, 2012, Andy Cobb’s frogs will come to life throughout Cape Fear Botanical Garden. These aren’t your average frogs! They will be found mowing the grass, toting a watering can, and pirouetting with a dance partner.

Andy Cobb, a native of Sanford currently residing in Wilmington, is a sculptor who has been working with copper for 15 years. He started with fish and birds, working to create a realistic replica of what he admired in nature. Eventually, he let whimsy lead the way and is now creating enchanted frogs from copper. He prefers copper for its wonderful warmth and color that no other metal has, and that “it moves, it’s malleable, it feels like skin.” After welding together a steel infrastructure, Cobb clips copper and bends the metal by hand to create the smooth curved finishes of the frog’s limbs and every detail of the hands. It’s a time-intensive labor of love.

Opening day festivities will be held on Saturday, September 1 from 12p.m. to 3p.m. Everyone is invited to the “Hop Stops” stations with factual amphibian information and hands-on activities and games. The Scrap Exchange, a nonprofit creative reuse center, will supply a van full of fascinating, colorful, and fun materials for children to use in exploring their creativity and making Amphibian Art projects to take home. Roving frog jokesters will deliver fabulous frog one-liners and pose for photos. An Origami Olympic Race will leap to a start at 3p.m.

Sweet Frog Premium Yogurt Shop is the presenting sponsor for this exhibit. Come and see “Ribbit” the Exhibit before the frogs leap away!

"Ribbit" the Exhibit runs through November 30 (closed Thanksgiving Day). Admission is free for Garden members. Regular admission applies for non-members: Adults $8, Military $7, Children 6-12 $2.50, and Under 5 Free. The Garden is located at 536 N. Eastern Blvd. in Fayetteville.

The official Grand Opening of New Deli at Cape Fear Botanical Garden will coincide with the opening of "Ribbit" the Exhibit. New Deli of Fayetteville opened its doors in July of 2006 by owners Stephen Brown and Michael Reyes. They specialize in making sandwiches, salads, baked items, and delicious desserts. They have won "Taste of Fayetteville", "Great Dessert Party", the March of Dimes "Chef's Auction" and the best booth at The Fayetteville Observer's "Ladies Night Out". The café in the Entry Pavilion of the Wyatt Visitors Pavilion Complex, with indoor and outdoor seating available, is the perfect place to combine a delicious meal with beautiful views of the garden.
