Happy New Year CityView friends! I don’t know about you, but I did not read as many books as I would have liked to in 2013, but this year will be different. For some, reading is relaxing and takes you to another world. For me, in the middle of my week filled with toting kids around, housework, going to events and finding great stories in our town, reading is a little bit of ‘me time’.

I’m taking it to the next level by creating a virtual book club called ‘CityReads’ – and I’m looking for some virtual friends to join me.  Each month there will be a book assigned with a date that we can all get online and discuss it in a private online thread. In this online forum you can be open about your opinions and pose questions for other readers. Not fond of one of the book selections? Skip it and read ahead for the next selection. This is a book club that you can fit into your schedule and who knows, you might even make some online friends. Depending on the book, we could even meet up to see the movie – if the book was a made-for-movie selection, like Divergent, for February’s selection.

So whether you read on an e-reader, a tablet, your smartphone or an old-fashioned book with pages, I look forward to you being part of the CityReads book club as we travel to desirable destinations, conjure up images and get a glimpse into the lives  of the characters on the pages.

Here's the pick for January: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby (taken from Goodreads). The discussion will begin on Thursday, January 30 at 8:30pm.

February: Divergent by Veronica Roth

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. The discussion will begin on Thursday, February 27 at 8:30pm.  **Movie outing planned**

March: The Husband’s Secret by Laine Moriarty

“Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret–something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive .” text borrowed from Goodreads. The discussion will begin on Thursday, March 27 at 8:30pm.
