The city of Fayetteville and the Houston Astros broke ground on a $31 million baseball stadium on Tuesday, August 21 at 11 a.m.

The ceremony took place across the street from the Fayetteville Police Department and adjacent to the Prince Charles Hotel on Hay Street. The Black Daggers, the U.S. Army Special Operations Command parachute team, performed a free-fall parachute jump into the event, flying in the U.S flag, North Carolina flag, city flag and Astros flag. The City of Fayetteville provided complementary peanuts, cracker jacks, hot dogs and bottled water.

The city has signed a 30-year stadium lease with the Astros, who will field a Class A Advanced ball club. The team is playing at Campbell University in Buies Creek. The new stadium will be off Hay Street, between the Prince Charles Hotel and the Subway/Amtrak Station. It will include a privately funded parking deck, and is expected to be ready for the 2019 season.
