The Fayetteville Police Department is scheduled to make a presentation on how to establish a community watch group to the City Council on Tuesday.

The Fayetteville City Council’s monthly work session begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

The council also is expected to discuss rebranding the Fayetteville Millennial Advisory Commission.

Lt. Diana Holloway, a spokeswoman for the Police Department, said crime prevention specialist Sharon Stevens will give a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation will cover the following topics:

  • The importance of community watch groups;
  •  The community watch group concept;
  •  The relationship between the Police Department and the community in association with crime prevention;
  •  And how a community can start or join a community watch group.

Millennial Advisory Commission

In the fall, the City Council approved expanding the Millennial Advisory Commission from 13 to 30 members.

The commission is tasked with providing the City Council with input on issues and opportunities to help keep young professionals and millennials engaged in the community. Meetings are held on a monthly basis.

The rebranding would include a name change to the Fayetteville Next Advisory Commission, an age change to serve on the commission and a new mission statement, according to material in the agenda packet.

The proposed mission statement says the commission is established to “attract, retain, and engage Fayetteville residents between the ages of 19 and 39. The commission is dedicated to improving the quality of life for young adults through targeted event programming and community outreach initiatives, making Fayetteville a ‘desirable place to live, work and recreate’ for this generation.’’

The term millennial limits the engagement of younger residents who fall outside the millennial age group, according to material in the agenda packet.
