Hard to believe, but high school football season is already here as Cumberland County teams are engaged in off-season spring conditioning. There is no set schedule when teams can hold the workouts, so some have already finished while others are in progress. A few will begin later.

Board of Education awards contract for enhanced campus security system

Campuses within Cumberland County Schools will soon have a new security system in place that tracks visitors entering and exiting school property. The county Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to award a contract to Raptor Technologies, a company that provides digital campus security to school districts. The contract will cost more than $196,000 in initial, one-time funding and an additional $60,175 in annual funding.

Methodist University celebrated more than 250 undergraduate and graduate students during its 60th spring commencement exercises Friday and Saturday. The university celebrated “Commencement Weekend” with three ceremonies for the Class of 2023 over two days: a graduate commencement and Baccalaureate service on campus on Friday and an undergraduate commencement at the Crown Coliseum on Saturday, according to a university news release.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III will deliver the 2023 undergraduate commencement address at Fayetteville State University on May 13, according to the university’s communications office.

More than 250 undergraduate and graduate students will receive their degrees at Methodist University’s commencement on Friday and Saturday. The graduate ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Huff Concert Hall on campus, according to a news release. More than 60 students will complete one of the university’s 10 graduate programs. At 10 a.m. Saturday at Crown Coliseum, about 200 graduates of undergraduate programs will receive their degrees.

Eighth-grade STEM students at Seventy-First Classical Middle School launched rockets that they "made from scratch" on Wednesday afternoon in the back lawn of the main school building. The hands-on activity required the students to design and build their own rockets, according to a news release from Cumberland County Schools.

“It doesn’t matter how hard things get,” said Lucas Simmons, a sixth-grader at South View Middle School. “I’ve got to keep on going and not stop no matter how tough things are.” Lucas’ sentiment echoes that of hundreds of Cumberland County Schools students and parents who had the chance to hear former NFL player Keith Davis and former college football player Germard Reed during a two-day visit to local middle schools.

Samuel Aponte didn’t get the outcome he was hoping for last weekend when he competed in the National High School Coaches Association wrestling tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia. But he did come away with a pretty solid consolation prize, recognition as an All American wrestler.

School board approves use of federal funds for ‘community engagement’ bus

Cumberland County Schools will soon make use of a “community engagement” bus. The Board of Education voted 6-3 Tuesday to approve the use of $109,000 in federal funding to purchase the bus. Local tax dollars won’t be used for the purchase as the money will be taken from the district’s elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund, federal COVID-19 relief funding allocated by Congress to local school districts during the earlier parts of the pandemic.

Members of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday questioned the price tag estimated for replacing E.E. Smith High School. The new 254,479-square-foot facility would accommodate 1,600 students.

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday will consider whether to move forward with a plan to replace the aging E.E. Smith High School. Methodist University and Cape Fear Valley Health are partnering to open a four-year medical school that will welcome students in July 2026. The Center for Medical Education and Neuroscience at at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center will house the new medical school with a focus on providing better medical care for rural and underserved populations and diversifying the physician workforce in the area, officials said Monday as a news conference to announce the initiative.

‘It leads to burnout’: Cumberland County Schools facing teacher shortage

North Carolina faces a widespread teacher shortage, and Cumberland County is no exception. As of last week, there are 155 vacant teaching positions in the school district out of a budgeted 3,551, according to numbers provided by Cumberland County Schools. That’s a vacancy rate of 4.36%.

Two executives at Fayetteville Technical Community College have been appointed to the senior leadership team, according to a news release from the college. Murtis Worth has been named senior vice president for academic and student services. Tiffany Watts has been named chief of staff and vice president for strategic initiatives.
