Good, mysterious fun at Cape Fear Botanical Garden

Was it the best man with a cake knife? The groom with a gun? The arrogant wedding planner? Well, the only thing that guy was holding was his cellphone.

As it turns out, it was the mother of the bride, of all people, with a candelabra.

On one of the most sweltering evenings of the year, Cape Fear Botanical Garden proved to be the perfect setting to cool off and enjoy some whodunit fun with an entertaining and actually perfectly harmless cast from the Gilbert Theater. They teamed up for “Speak Now or Forever the Killer Goes Free,” a murder mystery scavenger hunt centered on a garden wedding full of suspects.

It all took place Friday, July 17, offering those in attendance some much-appreciated entertainment    while still maintaining social distancing guidelines. A Catered Affair’s food truck was on hand, along with desserts from Marcie’s Cakes and Bakes. Michael Pennink provided live music, and there was even a signature Crime of Passion cocktail.

A good time was had by all. Well, I suppose that is, unless you count the bride, Agatha Fishy.

The garden will host another murder mystery scavenger hunt on Aug. 21 from 5;30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This one is entitled “A Hawaiian Homicide.” Sounds like a lot of aloha-style fun.
