8 Cumberland County schools will have new principals

Board of Education approves recommendations at Brentwood, Cashwell, E.E. Miller, Raleigh Road, others

Eight schools in Cumberland County will have new principals for the coming school year.

The county Board of Education approved the recommendations of Superintendent Marvin Connelly Jr. on Tuesday night, according to a news release from the school system.

The newly assigned principals are:

  • Casey Yates, Brentwood Elementary School. Yates has been assistant principal at Gray’s Creek High School. She joined CCS in 2004 as a teacher and received her master’s degree in school administration in 2014.
  • Catherine Abraham-Johnson, E.E. Miller Elementary School. She has been assistant principal at Terry Sanford High School. Abraham-Johnson the educational leadership doctoral program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in May 2020. She joined CCS in 2004 as a fifth-grade teacher.
  • Tiffany Eakins, Elizabeth Cashwell Elementary School. Eakins has been a kindergarten-fifth grade English language arts curriculum specialist for the district. She joined CCS in 2009 as a teacher and received her master’s degree in school administration in 2015.
  • Ayanna Richard, Howard Learning Academy. Richard has been the exceptional children’s director for the district. She joined CCS in 2020 and received her master’s degree in school administration in 2011.
  • Waylinda Williams, Ponderosa Elementary School. Williams has been assistant principal for nearly eight years at Ponderosa Elementary. She came to CCS in 2000 and received a master’s degree in middle grades education in 1997 and a master’s in school administration in 2004.

  • Elizabeth Blue, Raleigh Road Elementary School. Blue has been assistant principal at Howard Hall Elementary School since 2017. She has been a CCS “premier professional” for 13 years. She received her master’s degree in school administration in 2015.

  • Queesha Tillman, Seventy-First Classical Middle School. Tillman has been assistant principal at Loyd Auman Elementary School. She earned a doctorate in human services in 2013, a master’s in school administration in 2016, and a master of arts in education in 2009. She was CCS assistant principal of the year in 2022 and was named National Outstanding Assistant Principal in 2022 by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
  • Anita McLaughlin, Sunnyside Elementary School. McLaughlin has been assistant principal at Douglas Byrd Middle School. She received her master’s degree in 2011 and has been a “premier professional” since 2003.
