A new twist on the Tequila Sunrise

 “Tequila Sunrise” was a hit when Glenn Frey and Don Henley wrote it for the Eagles in 1973, but for CityView’s Summer in the City at the Skyline event Saturday, we were interested in a different kind of tequila sunrise.

The tequila sunrise drink that was popular in the disco-era of the 1970s and early 1980s featured tequila mixed with orange juice and a shot of cherry-flavored grenadine and was a popular drink at the Skyline. We asked Angie Malave, who owns the Wine Café on Hay Street, to come up with a twist on the classic.

“This recipe uses Rancho La Gloria Margarita Mango wine cocktail instead of tequila,” she said. “It features agave, which is the same thing used to make mezcal and tequila. It’s ready to drink as is, but I like to blend it and add jalapeno to it.”

For our Sunrise cocktail, Malave mixed the Margarita Mango with orange juice. Instead of grenadine, she used homemade pomegranate juice syrup.
