Each month through the school system’s character recognition program titled “Amazing Acts of Character,” schools are asked to nominate students who display character above and beyond expected behavior.
One student was recently selected from individual school nominations for displaying “Amazing Acts of Character” and will be recognized and honored during the April Cumberland County Board of Education meeting.
Kody Morkrid, a 3rd grader at E. Melvin Honeycutt Elementary School—According to Kody’s teacher, Nicole Willis, the 10-year-old “consistently shows fairness amongst his peers in the classroom.” Recently, while playing a math review game in class, Kody noticed that other students on his team were not giving everyone an equal opportunity to answer the questions. Willis said that Kody stopped the game and took a stand.
“Guys,” he said, “we need to treat everyone fair because that is how we would want to be treated.” His teacher also noted Kody “always puts others above himself and seeks out an equal opportunity for his peers.”
The “Amazing Acts of Character” committee selects winners based on school nominations. The winners are then recognized at the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, where they are presented with a special trophy and certificate.
