Animal Services temporarily waiving adoption fees

Fees will be waived next week as part of the national ‘Clear the Shelters’ campaign

Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for all shelter pets next week as part of the national “Clear the Shelters’’campaign.

The fees will be waived starting Monday and continuing through Aug. 27. Adoptions will be done on a first-come, first-served basis. Up to two animals can be adopted per household, the county said in a release.

“We are very excited to participate in Clear the Shelters again in 2022,’’ Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said in the release. “We have many wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption so we hope anyone who is considering adding a furry family member will come out during the week of the event to meet our pets.”

As of Thursday, there were 117 cats and 102 dogs at the shelter, Smith said.

“We stay very full,’’ she said.

Because of that, events like Clear the Shelter help “buy us some space and some time,’’ she said.

The first year Animal Services participated, it did a one-day event. It was pre-COVID and more than 900 people showed up, she said.

They now do a week.

“People can come out and find their new best friend,’’ she said.

Those wishing to adopt an animal must have photo identification and be at least 18 years old.

Rabies vaccination, deworming, flea treatment, combo vaccine, microchip, heartworm test (dogs only) and a spay or neuter operation are included as part of the adoption, the release said.

Adoption fees are usually $100 for dogs and $70 for cats.

Animal Services is at 4704 Corporation Drive. It will be open for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 27.
