ASOM hosts Mogadishu Mile 5K

Posted

The U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum (ASOM) is hosting its first annual Mogadishu Mile 5K on Oct. 1 in honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, also known as Operation Gothic Serpent.

The event’s name, "Mogadishu Mile,” refers to a route that was run by U.S. Army Rangers and Special Forces soldiers from a helicopter crash site to an appointed rally point held by the 10th Mountain Division on National Street during the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993. The battle was the inspiration for the 2001 movie “Black Hawk Down.”

The Mogadishu Mile 5K will start at 8 a.m. Oct. 1 and is not a timed race. Participants will run, ruck or walk at their own pace, and there will be no prizes or places for the top three finishers.

Registration is open to anyone 18 and older. Children under 18 can participate at no charge but only with a registered adult. The first 200 participants will receive a shirt like the one pictured.

To register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/NC/Fayetteville/MogadishuMile5K.

ASOM has the helicopter rotor from Super 61, one of the Black Hawks that was shot down on Oct. 3, 1993, on display in its gallery.
