At a glance: Closings and other storm-related updates

Some schools and municipal governments are adjusting their operations as the Fayetteville area prepares for a winter storm that could bring ice and the possibility of snow. Here’s the latest:

Schools

Cumberland County Schools: The school system will switch to remote learning Friday.

Fayetteville Technical Community College: FTCC will move to remote learning Friday. Students should check their Blackboard accounts for instructions from faculty regarding classes and assignments from their teachers. Saturday classes are canceled. 

Government offices

Hope Mills: Town offices will be closed Friday.  

Cumberland County: Cumberland County government offices and the court system will be closed Friday. This includes the Department of Public Health COVID-19 testing sites, the Cumberland County landfill and container sites, all library locations and Animal Services.

Anyone scheduled for court Friday should call the Clerk of Court’s Office or check the website for updates. Anyone who has court scheduled for Friday will be notified by mail of a re-scheduled date.

Fayetteville: City Hall and city offices will be closed Friday.  

Fayetteville solid waste collection:  Friday’s collection will be moved to Monday. Monday’s collection will take place on Tuesday. Tuesday’s collection will be moved to Wednesday. Thursday service will operate on a regular schedule.  

Transit:  Bus and FASTTRAC services will not operate Friday. Services plan to resume Saturday.   

Parks & Recreation: Practices and games are canceled for Friday night and Saturday.

Shelters

Smith Recreation Center: Cumberland County opened the center at 1520 Slater Ave. as a shelter at 4 p.m. Thursday. It will be available until noon Sunday. All residents are welcome, the county said in a news release, but the shelter is intended for those who have no other shelter options. Meals will be provided, but pets will not be allowed to be housed at the shelter due to a lack of staff because of COVID-19 and position vacancies.

COVID -19 screenings will be done for those who enter the shelter. Isolation and quarantine areas will be available for people who either test positive or who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, the release said. Those who go to the shelter will be required to practice social distancing, wear a face mask and adhere to Centers for Disease Control & Prevention guidelines.

Salvation Army shelter: The shelter at 245 Alexander St. is available to people Thursday night.

Other

Airborne & Special Operations Museum: The museum will be closed Friday and Saturday.

Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg will suspend normal operations on Friday except for key and mission essential personnel. Adverse weather employees will be required to report to work as scheduled or remain at work. 

Child development centers: Baez School Age Center and Bauguess Child Development Center will be open for essential staffing from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. All other centers are closed. 

Physical fitness centers: Will be closed.

Fort Bragg schools:  Fort Bragg schools will be closed for students and staff Friday. 

Post Exchanges: All Exchange facilities will be closed Friday with the exception of the Old Glory Express and Linden Oaks Express. They will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Commissaries: The commissaries will be closed Friday. There may be a delay in opening Saturday depending on the updated installation status. 

Womack Army Medical Center:  The hospital and its outlying and specialty care clinics will be closed Friday. The emergency room will be open. Urgent care will be open Friday.
