Community activists call for public safety office separate from the police
In a crowded room at Smith Recreation Center on Monday night, about 50 people gathered to learn more about a new approach to public safety in Fayetteville. Lisette Rodriguez and Shaun McMillan, community organizers and city residents, organized Monday’s town-hall meeting. They called for the creation of an “office of community safety,” a city government entity that would be separate from the Police Department and would, among other things, respond to mental health crises and offer recommendations to hold the Police Department accountable

Local law enforcement officials addressed concerns from residents of the Murchison Road corridor Thursday at a forum hosted by the Broadell/Seabrook Community Watch. Police announce arrest of former Fort Bragg soldier in 2010 homicide
After nearly 13 years, the Fayetteville Police Department on Monday announced an arrest in the killing of Terrance Plummer on Memorial Day weekend in 2010. At a news conference at City Hall, police officials said that former Fort Bragg soldier Joshua Richardson, 41, was arrested Feb. 7 and charged with first-degree murder in the 2010 homicide.

School board approves use of federal funds for ‘community engagement’ bus
Cumberland County Schools will soon make use of a “community engagement” bus. The Board of Education voted 6-3 Tuesday to approve the use of $109,000 in federal funding to purchase the bus. Local tax dollars won’t be used for the purchase as the money will be taken from the district’s elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund, federal COVID-19 relief funding allocated by Congress to local school districts during the earlier parts of the pandemic.
