FSU receives grant to study artificial intelligence

Fayetteville State University has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to support a research project dealing with social relevance and trustworthiness of artificial intelligence.

The three-year grant totals $397,055, the university said in a release. FSU computer and forensic scientists will work with criminal justice experts to create educational modules that infuse knowledge of social relevance and trustworthiness of AI into mainstream research and education materials, the release said.

“Innovation and scientific inquiry are hallmarks of Fayetteville State University’s exceptional interdisciplinary academic environment,” said Dr. Monica Terrell Leach, the university’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are thrilled that the National Science Foundation continues to recognize the work of our outstanding faculty through this grant, which further strengthens our research enterprise and helps give our students the hands-on learning experience they need and deserve to thrive and become the next generation of trailblazers.”

The project will support students through classroom instruction and research projects in this multidisciplinary area, the release said.

Warrior-Scholar Project launches partnership with Fayetteville State

The Warrior-Scholar Project is partnering with Fayetteville State University to help veterans succeed in higher education through an academic boot camp, the university said in a release.

Fayetteville State is the first historically black university to host a Warrior-Scholar Project academic boot camp, the release said. The first WSP Humanities Academic Boot Camp is scheduled for June 11-18. Students can apply at warrior-scholar.org/apply.

“As a premier destination for military-connected students, Fayetteville State University is proud to host the first Warrior-Scholar Project boot camp at an HBCU to prepare enlisted veterans to succeed in their post-military careers,” Chancellor Darrell T. Allison said in the release. “Just like the military-connected students who call Bronco Nation their ‘home,’ we have embraced an institutional commitment to serving our community and those who have sacrificed in the defense of our nation.”

Bootcamp participants will have the opportunity to learn from FSU faculty, receive mentoring from fellow student veterans, and begin to adjust to a formal learning environment, the release said.

“Transitioning from the military into an educational setting can be daunting, but we want to show enlisted veterans that their unique skills, viewpoints, and experiences are not only welcomed, but they enrich any campus, including ours,” said Siobhan R. Norris, FSU’s associate vice chancellor for Military Affairs and an Army veteran.

The Warrior-Scholar Project launched its first boot camp at Yale University in 2012 with nine participants. Since then, the program has expanded to 24 of America’s top schools and has helped nearly 2,000 veterans get a head start in higher education, the release said.
