Clara Moffitt Howell Moorman passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026 at the age of 97. She was born in Hatchbend, Florida, & was Florida State University’s very first homecoming queen back in 1948. Her last FSU homecoming parade, after returning for a number of parades over the decades, was in 2023 when she was invited to Tallahassee for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the first football team. Clara Moffitt lived most of her adulthood in Fayetteville, NC where she taught generations of students over her 44 years of teaching.

Clara Moffitt is survived by her sister, Louise Howell Vosburgh of Washington, NC, & her son, Dr. William Peter McKay III, & her daughter, Louise Howell McKay of Colorado. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Mary Kinane McKay, & her grandchildren, Megan Louise Godwin, Kelly Elizabeth Barnes, & Mary Catherine (Kate) McKay as well as many beloved cousins.

In addition to her parents, Clarabel Morris Howell & Louis Donald Howell, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Moorman.

A celebration of life will be held at the Highland Country Club from 1:00 – 3:00 on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026. She had many, many friends & family members in Fayetteville, & we warmly invite all friends & members of the community to attend & celebrate Clara Moffitt’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Clara Moffitt’s memory.
