Cumberland Community Foundation announced $153,900 in scholarship awards to students at its annual scholarship awards presentation on May 26, 2016. Students, family, scholarship committee volunteers, and donors attended the event which was held at Cape Fear Botanical Garden.
These scholarship awards range from $500 to $10,000 per year and depend on the size of the scholarship endowment fund established by the donor. Eighty of the awards, totaling $153,900, are selected by the Cumberland Community Foundation Scholarship Advisory Group, volunteer committees made of retired educators and community volunteers. Most awards are based on financial need, academic excellence, and citizenship. A few are based on a special skill or interest area.
The community foundation’s scholarship awards are announced in May each year at the annual reception. A list of recipients for 2016 is available on the website: http://www.cumberlandcf.org/scholarships-2/recipients/.
Cumberland Community Foundation also awards an additional $500,000 in scholarships annually through the Robert H. Short/Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program. These scholarships are for Cumberland County students who have attended Cumberland County high schools and are attending one of three local colleges – Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville State University and Methodist University. Applications are made directly to the three colleges. Selection is handled by those colleges with emphasis on filling the gaps in funding for each student based on their unique financial needs. Awards range from $250 to $12,000 per year.
