Cumberland County Fair showcases fun foods, thrill rides, family entertainment

Autumn tradition celebrates agricultural heritage, community bonds

Thrill rides, carnival foods, live music, agricultural exhibits, and livestock and cooking competitions are coming to the Crown Coliseum Complex for the Cumberland County Fair.

The fair will open Friday, Sept. 2, and run through Sept. 11. Big Rock Amusements will bring its 30-ride carnival to the fairgrounds.

The fair is a showcase for the history of local agriculture, the diversity of arts and crafts work, and good old-fashioned family entertainment, according to its organizers.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for ages 3-12. Fees apply for online ticket orders.

Free admission will be offered for health care professionals on Friday; for school employees on Sept. 9; and for military personnel and first responders on Sept. 11. An ID card is required.

A ribbon-cutting is planned at 4:45 p.m. Friday, and the fair will open at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the fair will open at 1 p.m.

Sunday is Faith and Family Day, sponsored by Manna Church.

The fair will open at 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, Sept. 6-9, and at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11.

Saturday, Sept. 10, will bring a step show and dance showcase. Sunday, Sept. 11, is A Day of Giving sponsored by Food Lion and PWC to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina.

Live music is planned every day. The schedule includes:

  • Friday: Reflections II playing variety, 7-10 p.m.
  • Saturday: Heaterz blues band, 2-5:30 p.m.; Bobby Gilstrap & Friends, playing Southern classic rock and country, 6:30-10 p.m.
  • Sunday features a series of gospel bands: Born Again Band, 2-3 p.m.; New Direction, 3:30-4:30 p.m.; Dipsy D, 5-6 p.m.; and Nikki Giovanni Worship, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Monday: Robbie Reid Band plays blues and rock, 7-10 p.m.
  • Tuesday: Autumn Tide plays variety, 7-10 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Spank plays rock and R&B, 7-10 p.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 8: Third Crush plays Southern rock and country, 7-10 p.m.
  • Friday Sept. 9: Dalton Davis Band plays country, 7-10 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 10: Country by Chris Nelson Band, 2-5:30 p.m.; ’90s rock by Scroggins Band, 6:30-10 p.m.
  • Sunday, Sept. 11: Gospel music by Michael Daughtry Band, 2-3 p.m.; Destiny Now, 3:30-4:30 p.m.; Carolina Tradition, 5-6 p.m.; and Travelin’ Lite, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Livestock exhibits and competitions will feature pigs, cattle, lambs, goats, chickens. Agricultural exhibits will include field crops, farm products and farm equipment.

Horticultural exhibits will showcase hanging baskets, potted plants, vegetables and herbs. Food competitions will feature canned fruits and vegetables; jams and jellies; and baked goods.

Other categories include wine; arts and crafts; quilting and crocheting; and 4-H club members’ projects.
