Standout Senior 2023: Hannah Frowner

Cumberland International student challenged by work with yearbook

Posted

Each year, Cumberland County Schools names a graduating senior at each high school as a Standout Senior. The 17 2023 Standout Seniors are bright, hard-working students who have overcome the odds to graduate and dedicate themselves to serving their community.

To learn more about their plans to attend college, serve in the military or begin their careers, go to www.ccs.k12.nc.us/graduation.

Hannah Frowner will graduate from Cumberland International Early College High School. She answered these questions about her education and her future.

  • What accomplishment are you most proud of or what do you want to be remembered for?

I have actively been a part of the yearbook club since elementary school. Since becoming part of the yearbook club at Cumberland International Early College High School, I have been a photographer, editor, and student adviser. I have had the opportunity to see my classmates and staff at Cumberland International participate in all types of activities. I also learned the importance of deadlines and working with various personalities that my mom says will help me with real-world situations.

  • What are your plans after graduation?

I will attend college to study chemical engineering with a minor in chemistry or computer science/engineering.

  • How many volunteer hours have you accrued?

I have accrued 100+ volunteer hours,

  • Have you received any scholarships? If so, please list them.

N.C. State University NC Scholarship, $3,775; UNC-Charlotte Chancellor's Scholarship, $2,000; NC Scholarship, $2,850; UNC-C Tuition Scholarship, $3,000; University of Kentucky Bluegrass Spirit scholarship, $10,000; William C. Parker,  $10,000;  N,C, Agricultural & Technical State University Distinguished Aggie Award, $28,000; William Peace University, $68,000 for four years Presidential Scholarship; Academic Excellence Award with an additional $1,500;, Community Service Scholarship, $500; honors program, $1,000; North Carolina Central University NC Scholarshi,p $2,270; and Western Carolina University Catamount Commitment Program, $3,000.

  • Please list your extracurricular activities and tell us about your favorite.

I have participated in the Arabic Club, Arabic Honor Society, Fayetteville Cumberland Youth Council, Global Girls, Green Team, International Club, Science Olympiad Club, National Honor Society, SGA, STEAM Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and yearbook. I had an excellent time learning and experimenting in Science Olympiad. I always enjoyed attending competitions. They have been fun and always challenging. While in the Science Olympiad Club, I competed in topics like chem lab and Fast Facts while in the club. These events taught me many things I needed to learn in the classroom. I helped Mrs. Brown-Davis organize teams, collect information, send out reminders to students, and prepare and clean up after the competitions. This position taught me that every decision you make affects the team. I also learned how to stay organized.

  • Do you have a self-statement or a favorite quote that best describes you and your aspirations for the future?

“Remember that God has you, and that your attitude determines your altitude.”

  • How do you feel Cumberland County Schools has prepared you for your future?

CCS encouraged me to create a better work ethic, develop time-management skills, participate in school activities, and become a leader. My favorite opportunities the district has provided me are participating in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and attending SGA state conventions. In both opportunities, I was able to grow as a leader and network with other kids around the state.

  • Is there someone on staff in the school system (a teacher, administrator, coach, etc.) who has made a lasting impression on you? What lesson did they teach you that you will always remember?

This is a tricky question because each teacher at Cumberland International has taught me something new and memorable each year. But the one that was inspiring and made a lasting impression was Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Freeman is my school's English I and English II teacher and the former Yearbook Club adviser. During the past four years, she has helped me grow in yearbook and with my schoolwork. We have grown very close, and this has fueled my love for photography and encouraged me to keep working even when I sometimes wanted to quit. She taught me to always follow my heart’s desires and my dreams. Mrs. Freeman was there doing anything to support me, whether it was writing my letters of recommendation for scholarships and colleges, reviewing my essays, or just giving me advice.

  • What elementary school did you attend?

I attended Howard Hall Elementary School in Fayetteville.
