Cumberland schools seek part-time literacy tutors for elementary students

Posted

Cumberland County Schools is seeking paid, part-time literacy tutors for elementary students, according to a school system news release.

The district is partnering with N.C. Education Corps to provide tutoring for young readers.

Qualified candidates may include college students, recent graduates, parents, and former educators who have flexible schedules, the news release said. The weekly time commitment is three days and 15 to 25 hours in the classroom.

NCEC and the school system will train tutors, who will be employed directly by the school district, with a commitment to work for the 2022-23 school year, the release said.

Tutors will work with one to three kindergarten through third-grade students at a time, the release said.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, just 36% of North Carolina’s fourth-graders were reading at grade level, the news release said. Test results from the past two years show young readers falling further behind because of lost instructional time and other causes of stress.

NCEC was launched in September 2020 with the support of the N.C. State Board of Education and local school systems.
