Evelyn “Lucille” Douglass, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Lewis Moore and Margaret Ellen Moore; three brothers, G.L “Bub”, Ronald L., and Billy S. Moore; and her husband of 57 years, William C. Douglass.
Lucille was born on December 23, 1934, on Moore Creek in Meadowview, VA. She was the first of six children consisting of three girls and three boys. In 1952, she graduated from Saltville High School, where she was crowned homecoming queen. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Fayetteville, NC where she worked as a teller at First Citizens Bank. During this time, she met and later married Bill Douglass and started a family. As her family began to grow, Lucille left the bank to take care of her family and home full time.
For many years, Lucille participated in a bowling league that met at B&B and Lafayette Lanes. She was a member of the 600 Club, had a high score of 256, and won numerous trophies, patches and pins. She truly enjoyed bowling and had many friends that she hated to leave when it became time to put away her bowling ball.
Lucille was known for having a green thumb. She took pride in maintaining a beautiful yard and screened in porch full of plants and flowers. She was awarded Briarwood Hills Garden Club “Yard of the Month” on at least five different occasions. One of her favorite pass times was watching hummingbirds feed at her feeder hanging from the eave outside the porch screen.
Lucille was truly a dedicated mother and was the rock and glue of the family. She was happy with anyone who was “good to her boys.” All her hard work, dedication, and love for her family and friends especially, her twinkling blue eyes, smile and laugh will forever be remembered.
Lucille leaves behind her four sons, Jeff (Cindy), Jerry (Carol), Joey (Kimberly), and Mike (Christy); seven grandchildren, Steven, Michelle, Bella, Alexander, Samantha, Claire (George) Schwartz, and Ben; seven great grandchildren and two sisters, Ruth (Bill) Clayton, and Velma (Earl) Ball; favorite nephew, Fred Arnold and several other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held for family and friends at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 6 to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 26, 2024, at Hay St United Methodist Church with Reverend David Woodhouse officiating.
