The City of Fayetteville has been awarded $910,000 in funding from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, which will be used to reduce flooding near Eutaw Creek, a stream that flows into Little Cross Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin.
The funding is part of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Flood Resiliency Blueprint program, a statewide effort to reduce flood risks in communities across North Carolina. The DEQ Flood Resiliency Blueprint is working with local governments to create ongoing and future efforts to build a more flood-resilient North Carolina, aiming to reduce the impact, disruption and costs of future floods, the agency said.
According to the city, the project will enlarge culverts at McGougan Road and Ivy Road and improve storm drainage pipes at Lyon Road and McKimmon Road. The improvements will help prevent flooding in a nearby neighborhood that has experienced repeated issues during heavy rain, the city’s press release said.
“We’re thankful for this support from the state,” Assistant Public Services Director Byron Reeves said. “This project is an important step in protecting our community and making Fayetteville more resilient to flooding.”
