Posted

A Fayetteville man was sentenced to prison on a weapons charge in federal court on Jan. 4, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Tyrone Michael Thompson, 31, was arrested by Fayetteville police officers on Sept. 12, 2021, after a domestic assault was reported on Melvin Place, according to a news release.

Thompson was in possession of a firearm that was allegedly used in the domestic assault, the release said.

Because of recurring incidents of domestic violence, his extensive criminal history, and his gang affiliation, Thompson was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the release said.

Federal prosecutors assumed the case. On Jan. 4, U.S. District Court Judge Terrence W. Boyle of Raleigh sentenced Thompson to five years and 11 months of in federal prison followed by three years of supervised probation, the release said.

The case was investigated by the Fayetteville Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan Ontjes was the prosecutor.
