Fayetteville police ID woman killed in shooting on Ryan Street

The Fayetteville Police Department has identified the woman who died and made an arrest in a shooting that happened Monday afternoon on Ryan Street.

Police identified the woman as Mercedes Rosa Sterling, 41, of Ryan Street. Her next of kin has been notified.  

Roland Dewayne Smith Jr., 49, also of Ryan Street, has been charged with first-degree murder, the Police Department said in a news release. He is in the Cumberland County Detention Center under no bond. 

Police on Monday said Sterling was shot during a domestic dispute.

Officers were dispatched to the home on the 7100 block of Ryan Street at 3:14 p.m. to investigate a report of shots fired, a news release said.

Police found Sterling when they arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
