Fayetteville youngster wins DAR essay contest

By Kim Hasty

Congratulations to Fayetteville student Dorothy Johnston for winning the North Carolina Daughters of American Revolution’s American History Essay Contest. This year’s topic was The Boston Massacre, “a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution,” according to the essay organizers.

Dorothy’s essay won at the chapter, district and state levels. Elaine Bryant Hayes, regent for the Colonel Robert Rowan Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution, recently presented Dorothy with a certificate and medals for winning. She also received a monetary prize.

Dorothy is the daughter of Elizabeth and Jarold Johnston. The DAR has a contest every year open to students in fifth through eighth grade.
