For this local business, homemade goodness is their jam

Lady Bug Adventures Jams' setup at Cape Fear Valley Health Presents CityView's Ladies' Night Out on April 22nd, 2021

What was once a small-batch party favor or birthday gift for family and friends turned into Vivian Scott’s Ladybug Adventures Jam, based in Hope Mills and jarred with love for local connoisseurs of her sweet (and sometimes spicy) concoctions.

Scott’s jam-making began as a family-bonding experience in childhood and then an adult hobby as the years went on. She didn’t think to turn it into a business until the recipients of her delicious gifts began to exclaim, “You need to sell this.”

As the compliments grew, she finally decided she would try her hand at selling her creations in December of 2018 and was met with a positive reception. Her jams were available for sale in A Bit of Carolina, a gift shop in Downtown Fayetteville.

“That was a jumping off point for us,” she said. After that, she and her husband began traveling all over the state to spread some sweetness at vendor events and festivals.

Her jams are packaged in cute hexagon-shaped jars adorned with a ladybug on the lid and tucked inside a custom flower-adorned paper bag. The bags are made by Scott’s mother, who celebrated her 96th birthday on May 1.

Another special aspect of her jams is that all of the fruit used is locally sourced. From Gray’s Creek strawberries to peaches from West End,  North Carolina goodness is included in every jar.

Though COVID-19 created a sticky situation for this small business, Scott is thankful for her loyal customers. Some constants she’s seen from clients include business owners who order gift boxes of jam at the holidays to give to their clients, a baker who orders a special jam to use as a tort filling in wedding cakes, brides who order small jars with their own labels for wedding favors and many others who order special flavors for just the right color for showers and gender reveals.

CityView was first introduced to Ladybug Adventures at Ladies’ Night Out, where attendees enjoyed Scott’s tasty selection and outgoing demeanor.

“I am hopefully optimistic that I can continue this and make it into a full time business when I retire in the next few years,” she said
