A former major in the Hope Mills Police Department was indicted last summer on two counts of obstructing justice and two counts of altering or destroying evidence. His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 3.
The indictment, handed up by a grand jury on July 15, accuses former police major Bradley Hall Rountree of two counts of obstruction of justice and two counts of altering or destroying evidence. These are felony charges.
Specifically, Rountree is accused of altering or destroying fentanyl, a synthetic opioid drug that medical professionals administer for pain relief and as an anesthetic, but which also is sold on the black market and is widely abused. The indictment says this happened in December 2023. It does not get into further details of exactly how Rountree allegedly committed the crime.
According to previous reporting in CityView:
- Rountree was suspended and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was summoned to investigate following an incident that the town said happened on Dec. 12, 2023.
- According to 911 recordings and other records, emergency medical services were sent to the Police Department because a man, described as “one of the majors” was passed out, in an altered state of consciousness, in a bathroom.
- On Jan. 4, 2024, Rountree was fired.
Court documents say Rountree was arrested July 17 and was released in lieu of a $10,000 unsecured bond. This means did not have to pay the bond, but that he will be liable for the $10,000 if he fails to attend his court hearings.
“Mr. Rountree has fully cooperated in this matter, and will continue to do so until it is resolved,” said Rountree’s lawyer, David Courie. “Until that point, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
