Gentlemen Deconstructed

Posted

Whether it is downtown Manhattan or the Outer Banks of North Carolina, each part of the country has a distinct style. From polka dot socks worn with leather penny loafers to a pink, gingham button-down worn with color-blocking pastel shorts,  it is interesting to see how different trends come together in this melting pot we call Fayetteville. Although their style varies in many ways, CityView has rounded up the most dapper men in the All-America city to share some stylish tips.

Kirk deViere

Occupation: Owner and President of 219 Group

Where are you from? I’m originally from Chipley, a small town in the panhandle of Florida. However, thanks to the Army I lived all over and when I got out of the military 15 years ago, I settled in Fayetteville. It’s hard not to think of Fayetteville as home.

How would you describe your style? Casual Executive. I prefer collared shirts, blazers and no ties!

Where is your favorite place to shop? I try to shop local whenever I can. I like Ties by Marcus, Alberto’s and SteinMart. If shopping outside of Fayetteville it is Nowell’s in Raleigh or online at Vineyard Vines, Trunk Club or Zappos.

What is one trend you hate? I just don’t get the flat-brimmed baseball hat trend. Put a bend in the brim, please. I’m trying to get into the colored socks trend. I don’t know if I can rock them but I definitely have an appreciation for them.

Favorite style shoe? I like a good pair of loafers. They are just comfortable. I always make sure they are polished and clean.

Favorite Accessory? A pocket square adds that extra something to every look.

Go-to watch? Well, I’d have to say my FitBit as I wear it everywhere, but I also can’t go wrong with the classic Rolex Oyster. If you ask my wife, she’d tell you I’ve been eyeing the new Apple watch.

Favorite Scent? No scent. I don’t do scent. I actually cannot stand cologne.

Who is your style icon? Bond. James Bond. I don’t really ever think about it, but I’d maybe say George Clooney or Daniel Craig. They are always sharply dressed.

Terry Hutchens

Occupation: Lawyer with Hutchens Law Firm

Where are you from?  I am a military brat. I lived in England for most of my pre-teen years and then moved to Goldsboro when I was 16. I met my wife, who is from Fayetteville, on a blind date!

How would you describe your style? Conservative, but I’m not scared of trends.

Where is your favorite place to shop? Burdi, a small, family-owned shop in Chicago.

What is one trend you hate? I hate the dumbing down of dressing up.

Favorite style shoe?  My favorites are by Gucci and Ferragamo.

Favorite Accessory? Cufflinks and pocket squares are my favorite things to play around with.

Go-to watch?  Patek Philippe makes a really nice watch.

Favorite Scent? Whatever my wife is wearing.

Who is your style icon? Fred Astaire, Ralph Lauren and Willie Edge.

Mark Pezzella

Occupation: Owner of Five Star Entertainment

Where are you from? Virginia Beach, Virginia

How would you describe your style? My style is “preppy chic.” That’s a thing, right?

Where is your favorite place to shop? Joe Sugar’s of Saint Pauls and Men’s Wearhouse

What is one trend you hate? I'm not a fan of skinny jeans.

Favorite style shoe? Johnston & Murphy

Favorite Accessory? I wear glasses all the time and my frames are by Michael Kors… so they’re my favorite.

Go-to watch? Ralph Lauren Scent? Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani

Who is your style icon? David Beckham

John Voigt

Occupation: Soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division

Where are you from? I’m from Austin Texas. I feel that this has a quite bit to do with my personal style.

How would you describe your style? I would say my style is a mix of classic meets hipster.

Where is your favorite place to shop? J Crew. I’m currently infatuated with their blazers and suits. I like the fact that they have a slimmer lapel design. Some might consider this too trendy, but I personally prefer it to the classic, wider lapel design.

What is one trend you hate? I personally cannot stand the wearing of Chacos or Crocs in public.

Favorite style shoe? Wingtip boots. I love how versatile they are. I can wear them with jeans and t-shirts or a suit.

Favorite Accessory? Ray-Ban Wayfarers

Go-to watch? Orient Bambino

Scent? Fuel for Life by Diesel

Who is your style icon? Ryan Gosling

Jamon Marshall

Occupation: Medical logistician in the United States Army

Where are you from? I am originally from Auburn, Alabama. WAR EAGLE!!!

How would you describe your style? My style is classic and well-tailored.

Where is your favorite place to shop? Asos.com is my favorite place to shop. The website has different varieties of clothing and you can find something fashionable that’s within your budget. It is literally a one stop shop.

What is one trend you hate? Hate is a strong word, so I am going to say I strongly dislike the skirt trend for men. You probably won’t see it locally, but you can find it on runways or see young celebrities wearing them out in Hollywood.

Favorite style shoe? Monk strap dress shoe. It is a classic shoe that can be dressed up or down.

Favorite Accessory?  For the summer, it is a straw fedora hat.

Go-to watch? My go-to is the Citizen’s men’s watch BM8242-08E. I like the sleekness and simplicity of the design. It’s the perfect watch for any gentleman.

Scent? Burberry Brit for Men

Who is your style icon? I currently do not have a style icon. I find inspiration from magazines and fashion blogs. My favorite magazine is GQ.

These next two gentlemen are using their creative prowess to clothe others. Tyler Hair is a student at N.C. State and has created his own brand, Old South Apparel, which has a tremendous social media and collegiate following.

And we can’t forget our old friend Joe Sugar down I-95 in St. Pauls. His family has a long legacy of clothing the finest men in Fayetteville and the region.

Joe Sugar’s of Saint Pauls

How did your business get started? Three generations of Sugars have operated Joe Sugar's of Saint Pauls for 99 years. Far from the days when my grandfather, Joe Sugar, began as a peddler with a horse and wagon, we have evolved into a nationally known menswear specialty store. We’re located 18 miles south of Fayetteville off Interstate 95 on Broad Street in St. Pauls.

What is your favorite item you carry? My favorite item I carry would be Aristo 18 trousers and shirts. Aristo is an in stock pant house of fancy pants, like window panes, plaids, checks, etc., in a variety of colors. It is a vertical company that offers shirts exactly matching the colorful threads that run through the trousers. Aristo creates an alternative for a Friday night outfit without wearing a coat.

What is the best way to style/display your clothing? Displays should be impactful with the intention of stopping you in your footsteps. They should make you evaluate what you might enjoy wearing in the display. Additional merchandising may suggest the neckwear and even socks that might tie in with a particular shirt and jacket.

What is your design process like? I don’t design. I go to international clothing markets and purchase my merchandise. I marry a shirt from a shirt manufacturer to a pant from a pant manufacturer to shoes from a shoe manufacturer to offer at my store. I create at the marketplace.

What does southern style mean to you? Southern style is best represented by what you’re seeing in downtown Charleston or Savannah or on the collegiate fraternityl scene. It’s not just in the south today. It has transcended nationwide and has become one of the hottest looks around. My bestseller of the season has been seersucker, which appeals not only to the youth, but to the classic stylists as well. I see attorneys, doctors and other professionals wearing seersucker and the college gents. Our best-selling seersucker suit this season was a pink and blue combination. It was a sell out!

What inspires you? I’m inspired by the youth, television and music personalities, but, mostly, by the vendor displays at the clothing shows I attend.

What do you love most about your brand? I love the fact that we have survived and adapted for almost 100 years. We’ve clothed men of all sizes both near and far. People travel to my store, buy clothes and return home having spent oftentimes four or more hours on the road. I’m proud that people are that loyal to us. It’s our old school, personal service with fresh ideas that makes us unique.

Tyler Hair & Old South Apparel

Who: Old South Apparel got its start in September 2013 when I noticed everything in my closet looked the same. After owning a small clothing line in high school, River Boys & River Girls, I knew I could create unique designs to provide options for my then college-aged friends and adults. The concept of how to wear Old South products is simple… with a pair of jeans and boots!

What: I am inspired with design ideas when driving down back roads, being in the swamp, fishing on the river bank and just being around nature. It is easy to be inspired with my simple country life around Eastover. Once I have the ideas, I consult my sketch designers in South Carolina and Georgia.

Where: To me, Southern style means the lifestyle of the South. Our slogan for Old South is “Southern Apparel for the Southern Way of Life.” That is what the brand is all about, from sitting on the porch learning from grandpa, to riding down the back roads with your girl beside you. Southern style is every bit of it. Southern style differs from other parts of the country because I feel Southerners are proud of their heritage. We are proud of where we came from and family traditions we hold near and dear to our hearts. Not to mention there’s nothing like experiencing good ol’ southern hospitality. Everything around me inspires me, how can you not love being from the South? I once traveled to Maryland and realized anywhere that didn’t serve sweet tea wasn’t for me!

When: Currently, we are designing dress shirts and plan to expand our leather line this Fall 2015. Some of my favorite items that Old South Apparel carries are in our leather line. All of our leather products are 100% Made in America which excites me. We just don’t see much of that anymore.

Why: The thing I love most about Old South Apparel would have to be meeting people from the community when I sponsor events and getting to know my customers. Every aspect of Old South reflects that I want the customer to feel I know them personally. It is important to me that I hand select each retail partner based on how they connect with the values of our company and the traditions of the south.
