West to serve as school board chairman

The Cumberland County Board of Education elected Greg West to again serve as its chairman and Deanna Jones was selected as vice chairwoman for the upcoming year during the board’s meeting Dec. 14.

This is the fifth time that West, a licensed real estate broker and licensed general contractor, has served as board chairman, the school system said in a news release.

West first assumed office in 2002 and is approaching his 20th year of service on the Board of Education.

“Ms. Chisholm did a phenomenal job navigating us through uncharted territory,” West said of outgoing Chairwoman Alicia Chisolm following the meeting. “Hopefully, I can bring the board together and focus on our strategic plan and be an encourager. I hope to help the board be a cheerleader and improve everybody’s morale as we come out of a very difficult period.”

Chisolm was recognized for her “exemplary leadership” before the close of the meeting.

“We, the Board of Education, work diligently to answer citizens’ concerns,” she said afterward. “Our main goal is to take care of the children. We do this because we love children and are concerned about them and what happens to them. We have outstanding, talented staff who really care for the children.

“Serving the needs of our students and staff remains our top priority.”

West also was recognized for his leadership as vice chairman over the last two years.
