October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the business community of Fayetteville recognizes the importance of supporting women in the fight of their lives. Tara Hinton, Coordinator of Friends of the Cancer Center of the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, confirmed, “There is no feeling like hearing from a breast cancer survivor that you changed their life.”
Hinton noted that, “many businesses in Fayetteville choose to support the Breast Care Center of
Cape Fear Valley, and Friends of the Cancer Center of the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation
because all money raised directly affects the lives of local women and their families – contributions fund free mammograms, free wigs, turbans, hats and scarves, gas vouchers, emergency utility and rent relief, spiritual support and even massage therapy.”
From tea parties to boxing matches, Fayetteville’s business community provides a myriad of opportunities for breast cancer survivors and supporters to raise awareness, change lives and have fun doing it!
On September 19th, The Cumberland County Fair will host A Fair Fight Against Breast Cancer, a night to benefit the Breast Care Center at Cape Fear Valley. One dollar from each entry ticket will provide free mammograms for patients of the Breast Care Center. On this day only, the fair
opens at 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by BOB 96.5 Radio.
On September 21st, Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation’s Friends of the Cancer Center will hold its 8th annual Ribbon Walk & Ride along with a reception for survivors on the 20th from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Skyview on Hay. See the event website,

Dental.
On October 4th from noon – 2 p.m., Family Medical Supply will host their 8th annual Pink
Ribbon Tea, a luncheon at Vizcaya Villa. The event features lunch, door prizes, a silent auction, a guest speaker and the opportunity for breast cancer survivors to tell their stories. Family Medical Supply provides certified fitters for mastectomy products and Lilith Hurst of Family Medical Supply said simply, “This is our way to give back to our customers.” The event funds free mammograms for
uninsured patients of the Breast Care Center of Cape Fear Valley and Valley Regional Imaging. Tickets to the event cost $25 per person, but breast cancer survivors and a guest will be admitted free of charge.
On October 12th, A.B.C Boxing Academy at 7051 Cliffdale Road will host the 2nd Annual Ara Lynett Shakeel Battle to Beat Breast Cancer Boxing Extravaganza. Doors open at 4 p.m. Khalil Shakeel, owner of A.B.C. Boxing Academy said “I fund the entire event myself. It’s the best way I know to give back.” He holds the event to honor his wife, Ara Lynett Shakeel, who lost her battle with breast
cancer in April of 2012.
On October 16th at 7 p.m., the Methodist University Volleyball team will host their 6th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match at the Riddle Center. Admission is free, but the team accepts donations at the door and hosts a silent auction. Eddie Matthews, head coach, said of the team’s partnership with Friends of the Cancer Center, “The money we raise stays local and we like that.”
In October, Huske Hardware House Restaurant and Brewery, will host Huske for Hope: Concert for A Cure. Proceeds benefit Breast Care Center patients at Cape Fear Valley.
Talk of the Town Salon at 3441 Ramsey Street will hold raffles, sell t-shirts and accept donations from clients during the month of October to provide free mammograms to patients of the Breast Care Center. “We do anything we can to get our clients in and we decorate the salon pink,” said
owner and stylist Casey Etheridge. The month-long event is held in honor of a beloved Talk of the Town Salon client who received treatment at Cape Fear Valley.
Hendrick Chrysler Jeep will hold their yearly, month long event in October, Hendrick for a Cure, selling t-shirts and hosting cookouts each Saturday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. for clients and employees in support of Friends of the Cancer center.
So, mark your calendars. This season, there is no shortage of ways to positively affect the lives of local women fighting breast cancer and change lives by enabling early detection.
