By Carey Sleeman: Cumberland County Schools Orchestra instructor
For over 40 years, the Cumberland County Schools’ String Orchestra program has provided instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass to thousands of young musicians. Several studies have been done over the years about how participating in music and other art disciplines benefit children academically, socially, and emotionally. Unfortunately, not every child receives access to the arts.
As educators, we should be committed to providing equal opportunities and learning experiences for our students. So many times, financial restraints keep students from achieving their full potential. Cumberland County has worked hard to provide students with instruments and given them the opportunity to participate in orchestra. In this time of financial constraints, we are seeing a rise in demand for instruments that has exceeded our supply.
I have the privilege of teaching orchestra to students at Seventy-First High School, Lake Rim Elementary School and Cliffdale Elementary School. The students are bright, determined and dedicated. Help me give them the chance to experience music and participate in orchestra. I am looking for donations of string instruments: violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Any size and in playable condition. If you have any questions about the program or where you can bring the instruments, please contact me! Careysleeman@k12.ccs.nc.us
