Joyce and John Costin

Joyce Shackelford Costin of Fayetteville passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

Joyce was born December 21, 1936, in Wilson, N.C., the only child to Manuel Lyon Shackelford and Ollie Hayes Shackleford.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia Costin Terranova and her husband, Steve, both of Cary.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, John William Costin and a son, John Lionel Costin.

Joyce graduated from the old Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh in 1954. Joyce attended Peace College and received an associate degree in 1956.

Following college, Joyce worked at bank and then took the position as manger in Raleigh. Later, she worked as vice president of Costin Distributing in Fayetteville for many years.

Joyce was very active in the Fayetteville Republican Party, and one of the founding members of the Fayetteville Republican Women’s Club. She served in multiple leadership positions with both the local and state parties and served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1988. She was honored by a Lifetime Achievement Award and is an Honorary Life Member of the N.C. Federation of Republican Women.

Joyce was known as having a friendly, outgoing and independent personality, which left an impression on everyone she met.

She was a devout Christian and was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church and worked as a Sunday School Teacher for the Children’s ministry of the church for many years.

Joyce and her husband, John went to the same high school and met each other in 1958 at a breakfast café in Elizabethtown. They were married on May 29, 1962, in Bennettsville, South Carolina.

Joyce’s husband John passed away on August 4, 2020. The Costins lived almost their entire lives in Fayetteville and ran Costin Distributing on Grove Street in Fayetteville. John would often share his hobbies, which included cars and art collecting, with the many friends and customers who would visit him. The Costins both loved animals and were fond of adopting furry friends without a home.

A visitation will be held for both Joyce and John Costin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 5 at the Rogers and Breece Funeral Home at 500 Ramsey Street in Fayetteville. A memorial service in honoring them both will immediately follow the visitation at 2 p.m. Joyce and John will be interred together at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wilson during a private family ceremony.
