Ret. First Sergeant Kenneth M. Dennis, 88, of Spring Lake went home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2022.
Ken was born on October 4, 1934 in Columbus Georgia to the late Samuel Jackson Dennis and Edith Corrine Speights Dennis. Besides his parents, Ken is also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Mae Dennis and one brother, Donald J. Dennis.
Ken is survived by his four daughters, Janet Dennis Griffin (Jackie), Andrea Dennis Ashley (Richard), Gail Dennis Davis, and Karen Jean Dennis; brothers, David Dennis, Danny Dennis, Darryl Dennis and Doug Dennis; 9 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; his four-legged companion for over 16 years, Sarge and many family members and friends.
Ken served his country in the US Army for over 20 years. During his service time, he received many service medals and commendations. He served in Korea, two tours in Vietnam and has been a lifelong member of the VFW Post 9103. After his service time, he obtained his Associates in business and shortly thereafter opened and operated Spring Lake Electrical Contractors. He previously served in Fayetteville Technical Community College’s Continuing Education area as Driver Training instructor (March 1975 to September 1981) and as Commercial Residential Wiring instructor (July 1982 to March 2008). He was also a former student of Fayetteville Technical Community College, and was the college’s teacher of the year in 1989. Ken was described as an instructor who “seized every opportunity to totally involve his students in hands-on projects.” His students completed numerous class projects for Cumberland County Schools, many churches, and other non-profit organizations. He was described as “setting the pace for his peers through diligent recruitment of students and overt genuine concern for the entire program.” His nomination for the Award of Excellence in Teaching defines him as one who exhibits a “humane and charitable side which carries his philosophy of life into the community. He shares his talents with needy families throughout our community by providing electrical services to them, free of charge.” Ken loved to work, always had a song to sing, and enjoyed entertaining people.
In honoring Ken’s life, there will be a visitation for family and friends on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Adcock Funeral Home. Services will follow at 1:00 PM with Woody Griffin and Rev. Randall Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow at Gourd Spring Baptist Church, Spring Lake. Services are entrusted to Adcock Funeral Home and Crematory, 2226 Lillington Highway, Spring Lake, NC.
