Dr. Kisook Chang passed away peacefully in the early morning of Saturday, February 7th, 2026, in Fayetteville. She was born in 1934 in Pyongan Province in what is now North Korea. After receiving her medical degree in South Korea, she, her husband, and young daughter moved to Bolivia to serve as missionaries, then eventually came to the United States.

Kisook served the Fayetteville community as a psychiatrist for 43 years. When she retired in 2010, she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a prestigious award granted by the governor of North Carolina to individuals who have made great contributions to the state. When not caring for her patients, she enjoyed listening to classical music and sewing, creating most of her wardrobe by hand. She will be remembered by her family for her immense kindness, talent, and wisdom.

Kisook is survived by her husband of 64 years, Reverend Pongkeun Chang of Fayetteville; her daughter, Dr. Carolyn (Bobby) Maynor of Pinehurst; and her grandchildren, Chris (Elisa) Maynor of Seattle, WA, Dr. Ian Maynor of New York City, NY, and Sydney Maynor of Chapel Hill, NC.

A visitation will be held prior to her service, starting at 9:30am.  Her memorial service will be held at the Korean Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville on Saturday, February 14th at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
