Man charged in fatal Hope Mills shooting

A Hope Mills man has been charged in a fatal shooting that happened Tuesday on State Street, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

James Christopher Brown Jr., 27, is charged in the shooting death of 26-year-old Jefferey Michael Cain of Raeford, the Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Brown was arrested Wednesday. He is being held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder, the release said.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a call of shots fired on the 3400 block of State Street, Hope Mills. The preliminary investigation revealed that Cain had a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead, the release said.

The Homicide Unit is investigating.
