Marshall Craig Howie, 98, of Fayetteville died on September 28, 2023.
A Fayetteville native, Mr. Howie was born on May 29, 1925, to the late Samuel and Clara Howie. He is survived by his wife of 71 years Betty Howie of Fayetteville, daughter Emily Howie (and husband Hal Norman) of Clarksville, VA, son Craig Howie of Washington, DC, his brother, Robert Howie, Sr. and nephews Robert Howie, Jr., and Nathan Howie (and wife Mary Lynn), all of Fayetteville.
Mr. Howie was a career public servant, working for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He retired in 1980 from the Veterans Affairs headquarters in Washington, DC as the Chief Budget Officer for the Medicine and Surgery Directorate. In retirement he served as a docent at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, specializing in hosting tours for foreign government delegations. He and his wife returned to Fayetteville in 1989 where he was active in his church, Highland Presbyterian, where he served as an Elder. He was a member of the Cape Fear Regional Theater Board of Directors for over 20 years as well as a Board Member of the Fayetteville Care Clinic and the Fayetteville Chapter of the North Carolina Symphony.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, with prayers offered at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
