Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on plans to revitalize the Murchison Road corridor during a meeting Tuesday.
The meeting is part of the Murchison Choice Neighborhood Plan, an initiative to redevelop housing in the corridor. Those who attend will be able to offer their ideas about future housing in the area, the city said in a release.
“From the outset, the Choice framework has been about community-driven, community-oriented solutions,’’ the release said. “Neighborhood residents, business owners and those who have an interest in the future growth of Murchison Road are encouraged to provide input.’’
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rudolph Jones Student Center at Fayetteville State University. People can stop by any time during those hours.
Representatives with the Fayetteville Economic and Community Development department and key community partners will be available to answer questions and hear from residents.
During the meeting, people will be asked to rank ideas for the Murchison Choice revitalization plan, including needs for housing, retail businesses, food stores, restaurants and other services.
Representatives from Fayetteville State will also be available to discuss the university’s master plan and how that will impact the area.
In December 2020, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the city of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Metropolitan Housing Authority a $450,000 grant to revitalize Murchison Road between Rowan Street and Pamalee Drive/Country Club Drive.
The city and the housing authority plan to apply for a $50 million federal grant to implement plans identified through the Murchison Choice planning process.
Chris Cauley, the city’s Economic and Community Development director, said working groups have been meeting to identify tangible projects for the Murchison Road area. Some of those plans can be put into place without the $50 million the city plans to apply for, he said.
Other projects for the corridor are in the works or in the planning stages, such as the senior center being developed in partnership with Fayetteville State University and the project announced by the state Department of Transportation that includes the installation of sidewalks and a multi-use path along Murchison Road.
