Music teacher’s sweet hobby has everyone abuzz

Posted

Ronda Ferguson Spena is a longtime piano and voice teacher, but she can turn out some baked goods that sing as well.

“I’ve always enjoyed baking,” she said. “I grew up in the kitchen with my mom, grandmother and great-grandmother.”

When she and husband Marten moved from Fayetteville to Oklahoma in 2011, she started her home-based Bee Sweet baking business. The name pays homage to her Ferguson family crest that had a bee on top, a fact that has led to her and her sister collecting bees over the years.

“We also reminded our children to be sweet as they grew up,” she said. “So, Bee Sweet seemed an obvious choice.”

The folks back home in Fayetteville had a unanimous reaction to Bee Sweet: “Oh,” they all said, “we wish you lived closer.”

The Spenas were happy to have the chance to move back to Fayetteville in 2020. Marten Spena is minister of music and outreach at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, while Ronda works in a tax office, teaches music lessons and keeps her Bee Sweet business buzzing with a Facebook page full of tempting photographs.

“I’m just a hobby baker,” she said. “I like making cakes that taste great and look beautiful.”

Among her most requested treats are the combination cake and cheesecakes she bakes in flavors like red velvet and carrot cake. Among her other favorites are a peanut butter chocolate cake, a banana pudding cake and a giant cake topped with chocolate-dipped strawberries.

She’s even in the process of making keto-friendly desserts using a special brand of artificial sweetener.

“I make everything fresh to order,” she said. “And I try to keep my prices down.”
