Good morning. Cumberland County public health officials say their concerns have grown that some low-income residents could lose Medicaid coverage and food assistance after the U.S. House passed a federal megabill last week, writes Morgan Casey.
The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which passed on May 22 with a vote of 215-214, includes an almost $800 billion decrease in federal spending on Medicaid and a drop of $285.7 billion for SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program also known as food stamps, over the next decade.
The bill now goes before the Senate. Once passed, it will head back to the House for approval before being sent to President Donald Trump for a signature. Read about Cumberland County’s Department of Social Services officials’ reactions below.
