Good morning. Longtime law enforcement veteran Johnathan Morgan is the new sheriff of Cumberland County.

Yesterday, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to appoint Morgan, who was a major and the operations commander in the Sheriff’s Office, to complete the remainder of former Sheriff Ennis Wright’s term. Wright retired in June and endorsed Morgan as his replacement.

Including Morgan, nine people had applied for the vacant position. His term runs through Dec. 31, 2026.

“I feel excited,” Morgan said. “I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the community and in our county government.” More in our lead story.

Welcome to CityView Today. Cumberland County Schools, the state’s fifth largest public school district, serves nearly 50,000 students across 86 schools. Cumberland County itself is also home to a number of private and charter schools. As students start heading back to school this month, check out our education directory from DestinationFAY, our annual guide to the Fayetteville area. Plus, for the train enthusiasts, we’re sharing a story by our partners at The Assembly. A project evaluating intercity passenger rail lines across North Carolina is igniting new passion for an old form of transportation. In North Carolina, seven potential routes received $500,000 grants for an initial scoping phase, including a Fayetteville to Raleigh line.
