Good morning. The Cumberland County Board of Education has approved updates to two major technology policies aimed at regulating artificial intelligence, strengthening student data protections, and updating internet safety requirements.

District officials said the revisions, adopted at Tuesday’s board meeting, were needed to keep pace with classroom technology and to comply with federal requirements under the Children’s Internet Protection Act. In today’s newsletter, education reporter Dasia Williams breaks down what’s new for Cumberland County Schools students in the age of generative AI.

Welcome to CityView Today. Over in Spring Lake, the town’s newly elected commissioners were sworn in on Monday night during the board’s last meeting of 2025. Fredericka Sutherland, a former Spring Lake commissioner who is returning this year, was elected as the new mayor pro tem. Plus, the candidate filing period for Cumberland County’s 2026 elections ends next week. We’ve been updating our list; check out who has filed to run for office so far.

In some personal news, this Friday will be my last day at CityView before I start a new job in 2026. I’m so grateful to have gotten to work with such a talented team of journalists over the past two years to produce robust reporting on a community like Fayetteville. We’ll have news to share about CityView‘s next editor-in-chief soon, but for now, I’m thankful for your questions, engagement, and support for our work.

Thanks for reading,
Maydha Devarajan
