Good morning. The fallout from gunfire that led one of Fayetteville’s largest downtown events to close prematurely on Saturday has continued into the week, as local government officials are contemplating hard-line solutions to public safety concerns.
Mayor Mitch Colvin announced on Monday he would pursue “sweeping new laws” to address gun violence in the city. The city council will consider the proposals, which include a citywide youth curfew and technological surveillance measures, at a special meeting on May 5. More in our lead story.
Welcome to CityView Today. The North Carolina Court of Appeals plans to hold a session today, starting at 2:15 p.m., at Cumberland County’s Historic Courthouse. The Court of Appeals normally hears cases at its courthouse in Raleigh, but three of its 15 judges will be in Fayetteville today to listen to arguments in two cases. Plus, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Anna Meyer will depart the symphony in late May. Meyer, who has served in the role since 2022, counts among her key accomplishments establishing programs on Fort Bragg, cultivating a formal partnership with Fayetteville State University and growing the organization’s audience and individual giving program. Read Bill Kirby Jr.’s column on her impact and what’s next for her below.
