Good morning. Off-duty Fayetteville police officers are officially allowed to carry firearms on Cumberland County public school property, according to a memorandum of understanding approved by the Cumberland County Board of Education last week.
District officials said the agreement is intended to strengthen campus safety and clarify confusion among law enforcement agencies about who is authorized to carry weapons on school grounds.
“Only sworn officers in good standing who meet firearm qualifications and standards are permitted under this MOU [memorandum of understanding],” Superintendent of Auxiliary Services Kevin Coleman told school board members during a recent committee meeting.
Officials said the agreement reiterates existing North Carolina law and puts expectations in writing for clarity after Fayetteville police raised the issue. More in our lead story.

Although the mayor and Fayetteville City Council elections are nonpartisan, de la Cruz has campaigned on being a Republican. Plus, Cape Fear Regional Theatre will debut its production of Little Shop of Horrors on Thursday. Check out our preview of the show below, which sees a bloodthirsty plant, a bashful florist, and some doo-wop chorus girls take center stage.
