Good morning. A bill that would make manufacturers of “forever chemicals” pay for the cost of public water systems to filter PFAS pollution is now in the state Senate after passing the N.C. House of Representatives last month.
The Senate bill passed a first reading on May 8, and the legislation was referred to the chamber’s Agriculture, Energy and Environment Standing Committee on June 5.
The bill, targeted at Chemours, gives the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality the power to order PFAS manufacturers who contributed to contamination in public water supplies to pay to remove the harmful chemicals. More in our lead story.
Welcome to CityView Today. In today’s newsletter, Cumberland County commissioners approved a budget of $406.2 million that cuts the property tax rate, gives employees a 4% cost-of-living raise and fulfills the school board’s funding request. Plus, a failed inspection and the nonprofit’s debt caused the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners to end contract negotiations and cease further discussions with the Salvation Army of the Sandhills. And, in case you missed it, Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis Wright announced his retirement on Friday.
