Passenger injured in Fayetteville crash dies; woman charged

A passenger who was injured in a vehicle crash on Pamalee Drive on March 5 has died and the driver of the vehicle has been charged, the Fayetteville Police Department said.

The two-vehicle crash happened just after 10 p.m. near Van Buren Drive.

Monya McDaniels, 20, of the 1900 block of Tryon Drive, was a passenger in a 2015 Buick Lacrosse driven by Jalea McMillian, police said in a release Thursday. McDaniels died Monday as a result of the crash, police said. 

McMillian, 19, of the 1900 block of King George Drive, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to maintain lane control, careless and reckless, no seatbelt, speeding and possession of marijuana, police said.

Police said the Buick was traveling east on Pamalee Drive when the driver crossed the center turn lane and struck a 2010 Acura TSX driven by Peyton Lucas head-on. The Acura was traveling west.

Lucas, 21, of the 3600 block of Abernathy Drive, and her passenger were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

McMillian was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries, police said.
