Person Street parking closed Tuesday for maintenance of ‘greenstreet’ system

Posted

Parking spaces on Person Street downtown will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday for cleaning and restoration of pavers that are part of the “greenstreet” project, according to a city news release.

Businesses in the area will remain accessible throughout the day, the release said.

The work will be done by crews with Triverus, a company contracted to maintain the greenstreet stormwater protection measures in the area.

The greenstreet project is a collaboration among the city’s Public Services Department, Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, North Carolina State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College, the release said.

“Greenstreet” is a stormwater management plan that incorporates vegetation, soil and engineered systems such as permeable pavement to slow, filter and cleanse stormwater runoff.

The Person Street project will be a model for similar environmentally friendly systems in other parts of the city, according to the news release.

The Person Street Greenstreet, which runs from the Cool Spring Street roundabout to B Street, was revitalized in 2015 with stormwater controls including bio-filtration bump-outs and floating pavement systems, the release said.

Cleaning the permeable pavers will provide better flow for stormwater to allow for filtering pollutants before it reaches Blounts Creek, the release said.

The Person Street project was the first of its kind in North Carolina and has reduced the volume of stormwater entering Blounts Creek under normal rainfall, the release said.
