Standout Senior 2023: Sumerain Seaberry-Hezim

Pine Forest student says school staff member’s ‘sweet gesture’ fed her hunger

Posted

Each year, Cumberland County Schools names a graduating senior at each high school as a Standout Senior. The 17 2023 Standout Seniors are bright, hard-working students who have overcome the odds to graduate and dedicate themselves to serving their community.

Sumerain Seaberry-Hezim will graduate from Pine Forest High School. Here is what she had to say about her high school years and her future:

  • What accomplishment are you most proud of or what do you want to be remembered for?

I am most proud of passing my classes and getting the encouragement to pass them and continue striving for success.

  • What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to attend sonogram school.

  • Please list your extracurricular activities and tell us about your favorite.

My extracurricular activities are not at school but just at home. I help my grandparents that I live with, and I assist some of their friends with their farm animals. I enjoy both so much.

  • How do you feel that Cumberland County Schools has prepared you for your future?

Cumberland County Schools prepared me for my future by giving me the opportunity to visit my school counselor in order to make decisions about my education.

  • Is there someone on staff in the school system (a teacher, administrator, coach, etc.) who has made a lasting impression on you? What lesson did that person teach you that you will always remember?

The school staff member that had a lasting impression on me was Mrs. Caine. One day during my freshman year, I was hungry and had not eaten that day. Before lunch, I asked her if I could borrow a dollar until the next day so that I could get something to eat for lunch. Mrs. Caine gave me her last dollar. That was such a sweet gesture that I will never forget. It taught me that teachers aren’t always mean or annoying like we, as students, sometimes think. They are human, and they want to help us just as much as we want help.

  • What elementary school did you attend?

I attended several schools in Harnett County. I was also a student at Long Hill Elementary School in Fayetteville.
