The Fayetteville police and fire departments are scheduled to present their fourth-quarter reports from 2022 at the Fayetteville City Council meeting Monday at City Hall.

It will be the first quarterly report from Police Chief Kemberle Braden, who was sworn into the position earlier this month.

In the Police Department’s last quarterly update in November, the department reported an increase in homicides and the overall crime rate, CityView reported.

Public hearing on new apartment units

The City Council will also hold a public hearing on a rezoning case that would allow as many as 72 apartment units to be built off Rim Road in west Fayetteville.

Low housing supply, like in most of the state and country, is an issue that affects affordability in Fayetteville.

A June 2021 affordable housing study by the city found that Fayetteville was short 20,000 affordable housing units at the time.

The study also found that 75% of all households in the city that earn 60% or less of the area median income were cost-burdened. That means those households spent 30% or more of their annual income on housing costs.

The entity applying for the rezoning is Leisure Living CB LLC, according to the agenda for Monday’s meeting. The company is requesting that the land be rezoned from single-family housing only to a zone code that allows for denser housing developments, such as an apartment complex.
