The Cumberland County Board of Education will hear from the public on the proposed closure of two schools during its meeting May 10.

The school board has scheduled public hearings on the proposed closure of Lillian Black Elementary School in Spring Lake and Ireland Drive Middle School. The hearings are scheduled for 6 p.m. before the board’s monthly meeting at the Educational Resource Center, 396 Elementary Drive.

The hearings will be conducted in person, and those who wish to speak must do so in person, the school system said in a release.

In March, the school board approved reassignment plans that will see students at Lillian Black and Ireland Drive Middle moved to other schools starting with the 2022-23 school year.

Students who attend Lillian Black are being reassigned to W.T. Brown Elementary School in Spring Lake. Students at Ireland Drive Middle will be reassigned to Douglas Byrd Middle starting in the fall.

The school system plans to close the two schools at the end of the 2021-22 school year.
