The State Bureau of Investigation is carrying out an investigation after a Fayetteville man was shot and injured in a traffic stop conducted late Friday by the Fayetteville Police Department.
The man was traveling at a speed of more than 100 mph in a 55-mph zone at around 11:03 p.m Friday along the All American Freeway when FPD officers pulled him over in a traffic stop, according to an FPD press release. The driver came to a stop on a service road near the Lake Valley Road intersection and next to Skibo Road, at which point the officers attempted to arrest him.
While resisting arrest, the man discharged a firearm. An officer discharged his duty weapon in response, the press release states, ultimately striking the driver. Officers performed first aid until medical personnel arrived at the scene. The driver was taken to a local hospital where he received medical treatment.
“As with any critical incident involving an officer, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will assume the investigation surrounding the circumstances of the shooting,” the releases states.Β
The officer who discharged his weapon is being placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.
